Since its first edition Solidarity of Arts has aimed to promote top cultural institutions and productions originating from the Tricity (Gdańsk, Gdynia and Sopot). Staying true to its mission statement, this year’s festival features Giuseppe Verdi’s opera Macbeth directed by Marek Weiss.
The official bill note of the Opera reads:
This Shakespearean tale of the course of power and the madness of holding on to it at all cost is begging to be looked at from the perspective of Poland’s recent history. Verdi’s music secures this tale the status of a universal myth and many contemporary opera theatres consistently endeavor to translate those myths into modern day reality. Although we are well aware of the risks involved in juxtaposing of an old Scottish legend and our own contemporary history, we believe that theatre, of all places, is where we must speak of the issues that are so painfully coded into our present day emotions. The evil born out of the greedy hearts must be called by its name – time and again. We have to continue to speak about it for the benefit of our own mental health. Brothers, who once fought shoulder-to-shoulder for the country’s better future, are now engaged in deadly (if petty) political fights. It beggars belief and hurts at the same time. This is why our Macbeth tries to bring back the time when most of us were proud to be part of the nation that triggered the fall of the Berlin Wall. The time before the disturbing quarrel began.
