Johann Sebastian Bach and Paul McCartney. They are the two favorite bass musicians of one Swede, who is a rather decent double-bass player himself.

Lars Danielsson

Lars Danielsson was born in Gothenburg in 1958. He is not only one of the greatest European jazz double-bass players, but also a composer, arranger, producer, and a not-too-shabby bass guitarist and cello player to boot. Cello was in fact his first instrument at the Gothenburg Music Conservatory where he studied. “Lyrical yet groovy” is how Lars’ website describes his style of play – most likely one reason behind the reverence of his music among jazz enthusiasts. For almost two decades the renowned Lars Danielsson Quartet (with Miles Davis’ former saxophonist David Liebman, Bobo Stenson playing the piano, and the ECM’s legendary percussionist Jon Christensen) was adored by fans and critics alike. In one of his recent interviews Lars admitted that the Quartet was in fact so strong, that once it dissolved he would struggle to get going with something new. “It was a point where I could only rely on myself. And then came Leszek…” (one must remember here that the artist delivering the praise for Możdżer has played and recorded with the best of the best in the jazz business himself, both in Europe and in America). Still, it is true that Lars Danielsson became widely known in Poland only once he started working with Możdżer. Before these two came together to record the excellent albums Pasodoble (2007) and Tarantella (2008), they had both formed a trio with Zohar Fresco dubbed “dream team” by Leszek. Two double-platinum albums by that dream team were The Time (2005) and Between Us And The Light (2006).
