"Modern" is not the most obvious adjective to accompany accordion, right? Enter

Motion Trio

Janusz Wojtarowicz, Paweł Baranek and Marcin Gałażyn. The three musicians whose music managed to break a spell cast over the instrument they play. Their accordion trio set up in 1996 by Janusz is unique on a world scale. Although probably more popular abroad, it still is a recognized class act in Poland as well. They already visited 31 countries on six continents, performed in Carnegie Hall in New York, gave masterclasses at the University of Chicago, the Royal Academy of Music in London and at the Conservatoire de Paris. One of Motion Trio’s first albums, the 1999 Pictures, won the Deutsche Shallplattenkritik award, the Grand Prix of the Polish Music Industry, and was named Album of the Year by the Jazzi Magazine critics. The Trio worked with Krzysztof Penderecki, Michael Nyman, Bobby McFerrin, Wojciech Kilar, Krzesimir Dębski, Trilok Gurtu, Michał Urbaniak, Tomasz Stańko and numerous excellent orchestras from all over the world. An involuntary enthusiasm is the usual reaction of the above mentioned artists when they first hear Motion Trio perform their own compositions in accordion arrangements. The experience of the group’s concerts has often been described as “a feast of sounds and imagination.”

Janusz Wojtarowicz is their leader and the author of most of their tracks, he is the arranger, producer, as well as a recognized theatre- and film score author. Paweł Baranek in turn has won a bundle of national and international accordion competitions to date and has written several of Motion Trio’s compositions. Marcin Gałażyn, likewise a usual [podium] suspect at accordion-, chamber- and jazz music competitions in the past, is the founder of Que Passa, a group he performed improvised flamenco, latino and jazz music with for eight years before joining the Trio. The prestigious All About Jazz website in their review of the group’s 2005 Play-Station album wrote: "You’ve never heard anyone playing accordion like this […]". Sounds like a fine company for Leszek Możdżer.
