Aukso command respect. They aren’t just good – they are also always ready to take on a new challenge.

Marek Moś's AUKSO Chamber Orchestra

We are talking one of Europe’s finest chamber orchestras. To be held responsible for this pleasant state of affairs are Marek Moś, an exceptional violinist, conductor and chamber musician, together with a group of University of Music in Katowice graduates. Aukso (Greek for “growth”) came into existence in February 1998. The name reflects the band’s “need for getting better, the need for consequence and for confronting new challenges.” Its (the name’s) only downside could be that it does not reflect the actual swiftness with which Aukso became a brand name on Europe’s cultural map.

Since its creation the orchestra has worked with highly regarded artists such as Piotr Anderszewski, Rudolf Barshai, Howard Shelley, Andrzej Bauer, Jerzy Maksymiuk, Mark Minkowski, Jacek Kasprzyk, Daniele Alberti, Kaja Danczowska, Agata Szymczewska, Władysław Kłosiewicz, Janusz Olejniczak, Olga Pasiecznik and The Hilliard Ensemble. Aukso also recorded albums with Polish contemporary music written by Grażyna Bacewicz, Henryk Mikołaj Górecki, Witold Lutosławski, Wojciech Kilar and Zbigniew Preisner. Known for their versatility and for taking special care of their originality, they often fuse the classical with jazz or rock music, or purposely bring about the confrontation of “different musical languages”. In this context it is not surprising that Aukso have also worked with Leszek Możdżer, Tomasz Stańko, Urszula Dudziak, Michał Urbaniak, Motion Trio and Voo Voo.

Marek Moś

Marek Moś is the conductor and the artistic director of Aukso since its beginning. Earlier he played (also literally) first fiddle in one of Europe’s finest string quartets, the Silesian String Quartet. He is the author of many archive recordings for the Polish radio and television, as well as winner of the 1979 Contemporary Music Competition in Kraków and the 1984 and 1988 UNESCO International Music Tribune in Paris. His music can be heard on albums that won Fryderyki (the Polish equivalent of a Grammy) in 1995 and 1997. Marek Moś came up with (and is the director of) the “Summer AUKSO Philharmonic” festival in Wigry, and since 2008 he is among the panel of judges of the Public Media Award Opus in the contemporary music category. When not busy with the above activities, he lectures at his Alma Mater, the University of Music in Katowice.
