"[…] If someone complains about the poor state of the Polish music scene, then they obviously haven’t heard Gaba Kulka yet." – Czesław Mozil

Gaba Kulka

Gaba Kulka was born in Warsaw in 1979. She is often compared to Tori Amos and Kate Bush – she represents a truly unique quality on the Polish music record market. She is a jazz-rock-pop-theatre- and cabaret musician, often tagged “alternative” to save ink. She is a pianist, vocalist and author of excellent lyrics to boot. Kulka is not exactly a new phenomenon (her second album Out was nominated for the prestigious Polish Radio (Radiowa Trójka) award Mateusz in 2006, and in 2008 she wrote and performed music to Rafalala Show – Zabawy Nocą in Warsaw’s Polonia Theatre), however, her career started to reach different heights only recently. In September 2009 she won the aforementioned Mateusz for „enormous talent, extraordinary music imagination and a trójkowy taste showcased on the Hat, Rabbit album which conquered the market in 2009.” In October, together with a group of outstanding Polish artists, she recorded Herbert, an album with the lyrics of the Polish poet Zbigniew Herbert. That same October in cooperation with Konrad Kucz she released her new LP Sleepwalk. Then came the Special Prize at the 6th TransVOCALE festival in Słubice and Frankfurt on Oder. In December 2009 she was nominated for the prestigious Paszport of the Polityka weekly (popular music category), and in April 2010 she won a Fryderyk (the Polish equivalent of a Grammy) and earned herself a title of “Vocalist of the Year”. Since September 2009 she has been hosting her own radio show Gabofon on the Polish Radio Euro. In other words: a massive dosage of Gaba Kulka is in the (and on) air at the moment. The chances of her having to return to one furniture shop (where she worked part-time only few years ago) are rather slim.
