Masterclass for vocalists

August 19th, 3 pm
Ucho club in Gdynia, 2 Świętego Piotra Street

Mirabai Daniels

Mirabai is a singer and a storyteller, often both at the same time. As her website puts it, she is a composer who managed to bring together her background in Eastern and Western vocal traditions with story and poetry from around the world. She feels at home in variety of styles and collaborates with unique artists who represent them. From jazz, dance and theatre music, through New Music and world music to her own original compositions. Coleman Barks, Souren Baronian, Eddie Daniels, David Darling, Steve Gorn, Baba Olatunji, Max Roach, Glen Velez, as well as Martita Goshen’s Earthworks have all performed with Mirabai. She is a member of the American Festival of Microtonal Music and has recorded with the Newport Classics and the Great American Audio studios. Recently she has been part of a Storytelling and Music production with the New Mexico Symphony. She is also on the faculty of the Contemporary Music Program at the College of Santa Fe and runs a private studio where she teaches the practice of the voice. Her latest album, This Love, is a collection of her own compositions – original interpretations of the magic poetry by Rumi, Lalla, Ghalib, as well as her 15th century namesake, a Hindu poetess Mirabai. The CD fuses the Western harmony with the melody and a rhythmic beauty of the Middle East tradition. At this year’s Solidarity of Arts Mirabai ran a masterclass for vocalists at Gdynia's Ucho.
